Washington Headquarters District — Morristown, NJ

Location

Morristown, NJ

Description

The project completed in 2023 at 114 Washington Street in Morristown is sited on the property that once was part of the “Oak Lawn” estate of Patrick & Elizabeth Farrelly located in the General Washington Headquarters District in Morristown.

The property was subdivided in the late 1920’s and the house constructed in the 1970’s. In the early 2010’s a new dormer was built on the front.  The house and dormer were unsympathetic to the 1920’s era homes in the neighborhood. We were excited to transform this house into part of the era of the district.

The program consisted of a first floor mudroom addition, new front porch, kitchen, and living room renovations.  The second floor program included an addition over an existing one story structure with two bedrooms for the owner’s growing family.

The owner also wanted new exterior finishes, that provided the opportunity to hide the unsympathetic dormer. The dormer did not change but was camouflaged by the addition of the gambrel roof.

Another gambrel roof was added to the second floor addition to create a unified composition. Shingles were added to the gambrel ends for a variety in texture.  New windows were added to the existing front second floor along with pilasters consistent to the front porch below.
